Fridays are typically off days for me, but since J Fridays are typically off days for me, but since January 2024, I’ve been working on a Master of Accountancy degree at @shorteruniversity . Many who know me only know me from the last decade in ministry, but prior to that, I had spent many years in the commercial flooring industry in various roles and a couple of years in printing (narrow web labels, stick packs, etc.) prior to completing seminary. The accounting field has changed a great deal in the 20 years since I finished my MBA, but I didn’t know it had changed as much as it has. This degree was where I was headed before I answered the call to vocational ministry. No idea how the Lord will use this, but since my wife encouraged me to go ahead and go for it, I jumped in (numbers nerd that I am).

Accounting is much more than debits and credits. I’ve heard it said that finance is the language of business. In fact, I’ve probably said that myself a time or two, broadening it to the language of organizations. Finance is how they measure performance against their stated goals to carry out their mission. If that’s true, and I think it is, then accounting is the grammar and syntax—the rules and structure that give finance meaning, that make the language coherent, precise, and understandable.

Just a few more courses, and come May 2026, this will be finished.
